El oficial de correos (The postal officer)
*The Postal Officer* is set in a town in the Colombian Caribbean and follows the life of Fernando de Gracia, a messenger who, in 1902—during the Thousand Days' War—is recruited to infiltrate the estate of the powerful Jesús Herbal Herbal and intercept a crucial shipment of weapons. After stealing the arsenal, he faces a choice that will determine his fate. Years later, in 1940 and 1955, his fragmented memory is confronted by the return of the past when a Spanish visitor reveals that his story has been recorded in an Argentine book. The novel serves as an examination of memory, power, and the cost of maintaining order from within the shadows.
The story follows Juan Cruz, a young man who inherits a coin from his father bearing the word *Physis*. He discovers that his city is crisscrossed by subtle signs: the inscription *Arjé* on gates, wax-sealed letters that arrive at odd hours, a park bench that functions as a lock, and a forbidden garage where handcrafted keys guard access to underground passages. These clues lead him to "The Table of the Awakened"—a secret society that protects a network of hidden corridors capable of connecting homes, loyalties, and guilts. Juan Cruz begins to open doors, guided by a tacit rule: in this world, every opening comes at a price.
Through prose that blends conspiratorial tension with introspection, the novel explores the relationship between truth and appearance, memory and power, destiny and choice. Here, symbols cease to be mere ornamentation and become actions: the coin is not an emblem, but a tool that demands a cost; a mark on a wall is not just graffiti, but a mandate. As the secret rises to the surface—through a contested ritual, a public reading, or a descent into the depths—the question is no longer what lies behind the door, but rather how much we are willing to risk to close it once and for all.
